VOLCANOES

How are volcanoes formed?

Volcanoes are formed when magma from within the Earth's upper mantle works its way to the surface. At the surface, it erupts to form lava flows and ash deposits. Over time as the volcano continues to erupt, it will get bigger and bigger.

Are there any active volcanoes in New Zealand

Ngauruhoe

Ngauruhoe is the largest, youngest and most active cone of the much larger Tongariro Volcano complex. It lies within Tongariro National Park between Tongariro to the north and Ruapehu to the south. At 2291m high it is the highest point of the Tongariro complex.

when did it last erupt

Typically Ngauruhoe has erupted at least every 9 years but there has been no eruption since 1975, and the last lava flow from Ngauruhoe was in 1954.

affect on the  area

In 1973 red hot blocks of lava were ejected and during 1974 and 1975 ash eruptions continued with lava blocks thrown as far as 3km away.

what happens to volcanoes the which are extinct

Volcanoes go dormant because magma from the Earth's mantle can no longer reach the volcano. For example, in Hawaii, the line of islands are slowly moving to the northwest. Meanwhile, the supply of magma stays in the same place within the Earth, which currently happens to lie beneath the Big Island.

why do the volcanoes extinct ?

Extinct volcanoes haven't erupted for tens of thousands of years, and aren't expected to erupt again. ... The tectonic plate carrying the islands is slowly moving, so that volcanoes are cut off from the hotspot underneath.

particle theory of matter-convection

AIM- to observe convection in a liquid

EQUIPMENT- 200ml beaker ,water, tweezers,a crystal of potassium permanganate, a drinking straw, bunsen burner, heat mat, tripod and gauze mat.

METHOD-

  1. set up a bunsen burner on a heatproof mat. Put the gauze mat on the tripod but leave it just on one side .
  2. fill a 200ml beaker with 150ml cold water.
  3. place the beaker on top of the tripod and gauze mat and allow it to settle for a few minutes
  4. carefully insert a drinking straw down one side of the beaker , ensuring the straw is touching the bottom of the beaker. Be careful as you do not want to disturb the water too much.
  5. using tweezers, drop a crystal of potassium permanganate  down the inside of the straw.Wait for the crystal to settle on the bottom of the beaker.
  6. very gently, so to not disturb the water, remove the straw.
  7. light the Bunsen  and slide it under the tripod so that you are only heating the outside of the beaker where the crystal is. observe.
